UK Engineering Giant IMI Hit by Cyberattack

UK engineering firm IMI says it suffered a cyberattack that resulted in unauthorized access to some of its systems.

IMI cyberattack

UK-based engineering giant IMI filed a short notice with the London Stock Exchange (LSE) on Thursday saying it fell victim to a cyberattack.

“[IMI] is currently responding to a cyber security incident involving unauthorized access to the company’s systems,” the firm told LSE.

The company has not shared information on the type of incident it has been facing, but said that it has retained external cybersecurity experts to investigate and contain the attack.

“In parallel, the company is taking the necessary steps to comply with our regulatory obligations,” IMI said.

The engineering giant said additional information “will be provided as and when appropriate”, and refrained from sharing further details in an emailed response to a SecurityWeek inquiry on the nature and impact of the incident.

The attack was disclosed roughly one week after Smiths Group, another British engineering company, disclosed a cyberattack impacting certain systems.

“We are currently managing a cyber incident involving unauthorized access to our systems. As soon as we became aware of this activity, we rapidly isolated the affected systems and activated business continuity plans,” Smiths said last week.

It is unclear whether ransomware was used in either of the attacks and whether the hackers attempted to extort the engineering giants. SecurityWeek has not seen any known ransomware groups claiming responsibility for the incidents.
