A vulnerability discovered in CloudLinux’s Imunify360 security product could have been exploited for remote code execution using specially crafted files.

Imunify360 is a security platform designed for web hosting servers. It includes website protection and web server security capabilities, including intrusion prevention and detection systems, web application and network firewalls, antivirus protection, and patch management.

Researchers from Cisco’s Talos unit discovered that Imunify360 is affected by a high-severity vulnerability that can be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a server by using a specially crafted file.

The flaw, tracked as CVE-2021-21956 and described as a deserialization issue, exists in the Ai-Bolit malware scanner component.

“[The vulnerability] could be triggered automatically just after the attacker creates a malicious file in the system if Immunify is configured with real-time file system scanning. It could also be triggered if the user scans a malicious file provided by the attacker with Ai-Bolit scanner,” Talos said.

The vulnerability was reported to the vendor in early October and it was patched the same month with an AI-Bolit update that was pushed out to customers with Imunify360 5.11.3. The vendor released a blog post at the time to inform customers about the issue.
