Level 3 Buys DDoS Mitigation Firm Black Lotus

Telecom giant Level 3 Communications announced on Wednesday that it has paid an undisclosed cash sum to acquire Black Lotus, a provider of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation services.

Telecom giant Level 3 Communications announced on Wednesday that it has paid an undisclosed cash sum to acquire Black Lotus, a provider of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation services.

According to Level 3, the acquisition of Black Lotus will add additional capabilities to Level 3’s existing DDoS service, which launched earlier in the year, including adding extra scrubbing centers.

Additionally, Black Lotus brings proxy-based DDoS mitigation services to Level 3’s portfolio, which will help customers defend against application layer attacks.

“Black Lotus’ proxy and behavioral technologies, combined with their experienced team of DDoS experts, perfectly complements Level 3’s DDoS mitigation and threat intelligence capabilities,” Chris Richter, senior vice president of managed security services at Level 3, said in a statement.

The acquisition marks another in the DDoS protection market and follows other notable acquisitions in the space, including Akamai’s $370 million purchase of Prolexic Technologies in February 2014, and F5 Networks’ acquisition of Defense.Net last May. Prolexic and Defense.Net were both founded by Barrett Lyon, an early pioneer in DDoS mitigation.
