Critical Vulnerabilities Patched in Veeam Data Backup Solution

Veeam over the weekend announced patches for two critical vulnerabilities impacting Backup & Replication, a backup solution for virtual environments.

The application provides data backup and restore capabilities for virtual machines running on Hyper-V, vSphere, and Nutanix AHV, as well as for servers and workstations, and for cloud-based workloads.

Tracked as CVE-2022-26500 and CVE-2022-26501 (CVSS score of 9.8), the two security holes could be exploited to execute code remotely, without authentication.

The flaws were identified in the Veeam Distribution Service, which by default listens to TCP port 9380 and allows even unauthenticated users to access internal API functions.

Thus, a remote attacker may be able to send input to the internal API, eventually allowing them to upload and execute malicious code without authentication, the company explains in an advisory.

Veeam Backup & Replication versions 9.5, 10, and 11 are impacted by the two bugs, but patches were released for versions 10 and 11 only. Thus, those still using version 9.5 are advised to migrate to a supported release.

The updates also address two high-severity vulnerabilities in Veeam Backup & Replication.

Tracked as CVE-2022-26504, the first of them impacts the component used for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) integration, and could lead to remote code execution, even if the attacker does not have administrative domain credentials.

The second of them, CVE-2022-26503, impacts Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and could be exploited to elevate privileges and run arbitrary code as LOCAL SYSTEM. The bug exists because code sent to the network port opened by Veeam Agent is not deserialized properly.

The company explains that patches need to be installed on the Veeam Backup & Replication server and that those servers managed with Veeam Distribution Service will automatically receive the patch.

As a mitigation step, in the event that patching is not immediately possible, the company recommends disabling the Veeam Distribution Service.
