VMworld 2012 – Quantum, a company known for big data management, announced a new offering for organizations looking for cloud-based backup and DR (disaster recovery) solutions. Q-Cloud, as the new service is called, is hailed as business-class data protection at a consumer cloud cost.

Q-Cloud is aimed at smaller businesses, or those that would top out at the low end of the enterprise market. It’s able to take data and duplicate it, backing it up both locally and in the cloud. The cost is scalable, and starts at 1 cent ($0.01) per Gigabyte / per month – assuming a typical de-duplication ratio of 15:1.

“Q-Cloud takes cloud-based data protection for enterprises to the next level. After years spent optimizing our deduplication technology we are now applying this technique to dramatically lower the cost of cloud storage for backup and DR,” said Henrik Rosendahl, the SVP of Cloud Solutions at Quantum.

Q-Cloud will take full advantage of Quantum’s DXi-Series data protection capabilities. This includes working with existing backup applications such as Backup Exec, CommVault, Data Protector, NetBackup, vRanger, Tivoli Storage Manager and Veeam. When tied with Quantum’s vmPro, customers can also snapshot virtual machines and replicate them to the cloud, serving as the heart of Q-Cloud’s Disaster Recovery as a Service offering.

Quantum is in booth 2017, and has additional information onsite for those attending VMworld. Additional details are also available online here
