Massachusetts Health Insurer Data Breach Impacts 2.8 Million

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care says the personal information of over 2.8 million individuals was stolen in a year-old ransomware attack.

Point32Health, the second-largest health insurer in Massachusetts, has revealed that the personal information of more than 2.8 million individuals was stolen in a ransomware attack in April 2023.

Identified on April 17, the attack impacted systems associated with Point32Health’s Harvard Pilgrim Health Care brand, including systems serving Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Commercial and Medicare Advantage Stride plans and “used to service members, accounts, brokers, and providers”.

“The investigation identified signs that data was copied and taken from Harvard Pilgrim systems from March 28, 2023, to April 17, 2023. We determined that the files at issue may contain your personal information,” the company said in a notification letter to the impacted individuals.

The stolen information includes names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, health insurance account information, financial account information, medical history, diagnoses, and treatment information.

“Harvard Pilgrim is not aware of any misuse of your personal information as a result of this incident,” the company says.

Point32Health started notifying the impacted individuals in May 2023, informing the US Department of Health and Human Services that more than 2.55 million individuals might have been affected.

This week, the company filed a refreshed data breach notice with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, updating the number of affected individuals to more than 2.86 million.

The company is providing the affected individuals with complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services.
