Ford has launched an investigation after hackers claimed to have stolen customer information.
The notorious hacker IntelBroker and a hacker called EnergyWeaponUser made the claims in a post on the BreachForums cybercrime forum on November 17.
They claim to have targeted Ford this month and they allegedly obtained 44,000 customer records, including names, physical addresses, and information on product acquisitions.
A data sample made public by the hackers indicates that ‘customers’ may not refer to end users, but rather dealerships that sell Ford vehicles. The sample shows the addresses of various car dealerships from countries around the world.
While the information — based on its format — seems to come from an internal database, it does not appear to be sensitive as dealership addresses are public information. It’s unclear if the attackers are in the possession of more sensitive data.
“Ford is aware and is actively investigating the allegations that there has been a breach of Ford data. Our investigation is active and ongoing,” Ford told SecurityWeek.
IntelBroker has been known to leak data belonging to high-profile companies, and while most victims have confirmed suffering some type of data breach, many of them suggested that the hacker’s claims were exaggerated.
