German cybersecurity start-up Edgeless Systems has banked $5 million in seed-stage funding to fuel ambitious plans to build an open-source stack for confidential computing.

Edgeless Systems said Berlin-based venture capital outfit SquareOne led the funding round. Several prominent European entrepreneurs also took equity as angel investors.

The company is working on technology for trustworthy data processing, joining a growing list of venture-backed startups working on products to enable the always encrypted and verifiable processing of sensitive data at scale.

Edgeless Systems is touting its flagship Constellation platform as “the world’s most secure Kubernetes,” leveraging confidential computing to isolate entire Kubernetes clusters from corporate infrastructure.

“We are turning the public cloud into everyone’s private cloud,” said Edgeless Systems chief executive Felix Schuster. “By encrypting data all the time, even at runtime, and providing the best possible protection against infrastructure-based threats like malicious admins or co-tenants, Edgeless Systems can transform the way developers build and secure public cloud workloads.”

The open-source Constellation and associated tools are already being used by hundreds of developers and DevOps engineers at companies such as Bosch, IBM and Intel, the company said in a note announcing the funding round.

The company said it would use the seed funding to expand into the U.S. market and continue research and development work on the Constellation platform.
