Well-known privacy and security expert Bruce Schneier has joined Cambridge, Mass.-based Co3 Systems as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the company announced Monday.
Co3 Systems, which provides cloud-based and on-premise incident response software solutions, said Schneier will be tasked with informing and guiding Co3’s technology and business strategy, and evangelizing the “responsive security” model that he has advocated for many years.
Schneier comes to Co3 after spending seven years as BT’s Chief Security Technology Officer and the previous seven years as CTO of Counterpane Security.

Schneier has been on the Co3 Systems’ advisory board since early last year, and worked together with Co3’s CEO John Bruce at Counterpane.
“Incident response is both a critical and long-neglected area of IT security,” said Schneier. “I have long said that security is a combination of protection, detection and response. And while there are service companies that assist in incident response, there is an urgent need for incident response products and tools. Co3 has done an impressive job building an incident response platform that informs and automates the process. I am looking forward to shaping the future of this next wave of the security industry.”

As part of the Co3 team, Bruce will be pivotal in this next wave of security, helping the industry to navigate there, and ensuring that Co3 accelerates the journey for customers.”
“I’m pretty excited about this,” Schneier told SecurityWeek in an email Monday morning. “It’s good to be back at a startup. Plus, John Bruce and I worked together at Counterpane…so we both know exactly what we’re getting ourselves into.”
Schneier currently serves as a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School; a program fellow at the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute; a board member of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and an Advisory Board Member of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
