Brazilian Police Arrest Notorious Hacker USDoD

Brazil’s Federal Police announced the arrest of a hacker whose description matches that of the notorious leaker USDoD.

Hacker arrested

Brazil’s Federal Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a hacker whose description matches that of the notorious leaker known as USDoD.

USDoD, aka EquationCorp, has leaked significant amounts of information stolen from major organizations. His targets include the FBI’s InfraGard portal, Airbus, TransUnion, National Public Data (NPD), and CrowdStrike.

In some instances, such as in the case of CrowdStrike, the hacker made exaggerated claims, but his leaks still made many headlines in the past few years.

In August, CrowdStrike and others independently determined that USDoD is a 33-year-old man identified as Luan B.G. and Luan G from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

USDoD later confirmed that the doxing was accurate, and said he would not be running away and instead try to reach some sort of deal with Brazilian authorities, offering them his cybersecurity expertise.

Brazil’s Federal Police has not named the suspect they arrested, but said he had hacked the FBI’s InfraGard portal, Airbus and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — the EPA hack was also claimed by USDoD.

Authorities also noted that the suspect lives in Belo Horizonte, the capital city of Minas Gerais.

A search and seizure warrant was served over 2020 and 2022 incidents involving the sale of Federal Police data, authorities said.

It’s still unclear if the hacker faces any charges in the United States or elsewhere.
