Access Management Startup Pomerium Raises $13.75 Million

Pomerium raises $13.75 million in Series A funding for dynamic user identity verification and access management platform.

Access management startup Pomerium today announced raising $13.75 million in a Series A funding round that brings the total raised by the company to $18 million.

The new funding round was led by Benchmark, with additional support from previous investors Bain Capital, Haystack, SNR, and angel investors.

Founded in 2019, the California-based company has built a zero trust reverse proxy that provides authorized users with fast and secure access to applications and services, regardless of the environment they are deployed on.

The company says its unified access control solution prioritizes access over restriction, dynamically verifying user identities and context to improve security and accelerate productivity, while keeping assets secure.

Essentially, Pomerium says, its solution works as a gateway between users and the assets they require, proxying the traffic and ensuring that only authorized users can reach the resources they need, but without directly exposing those resources to the user.

“Pomerium integrates as a thin layer in front of all the applications and services within an organization. This integration centralizes authentication and authorization processes, making it compatible with existing tech stacks without requiring significant changes,” the company tells SecurityWeek.

Employing a context-aware approach to access, Pomerium continuously checks logins, behaviors, devices, and locations for real-time user identity verification, offering a more efficient and secure solution compared to traditional one-time verification methods.

“Pomerium provides companies with complete data privacy as data decryption and inspection happens on the company’s own infrastructure, not on a third-party server,” the company says.

According to the company, its solution treats the connection between the user and the required asset as an ongoing series of requests, with the user’s identity verified for every request, to prevent unauthorized access.

“This distinction between connection-based access and request-based access is important because an established connection can be hijacked or a trusted user can go rogue. Because Pomerium continuously verifies the user’s identity, posture, and context, the next request will not be served the moment Pomerium determines the incoming request should not be processed and executed,” the company explains.

The company says its platform is used by organizations of all sizes, from startups to Global Fortune 2000 companies, including 8Gears, Crusoe, EdTech, ExtraHop, Optoro, Obsidian Security, Traders Club, and multiple education and higher education institutions.

Pomerium will use the investment to enhance its product and scale its team to meet demand as it expands globally.

The company’s Series A funding announcement came hot on the heels of it launching Pomerium Zero, a fully hosted NextGen Access Platform that provides secure clientless connections to web applications and services for hybrid environments.

“I founded Pomerium because your security solution is only good if it’s usable – if it makes your employees’ lives harder, they’ll simply disable it or find a workaround. Our clientless access approach means security becomes invisible to the user,” Pomerium CEO and founder Bobby DeSimone commented.
