Symantec this morning announced a new appliance series designed to help customers expand their data protection infrastructure with an easy to deploy, all-in-one hardware and software backup solution that integrates deduplication to reduce storage requirements.

The new appliance, NetBackup 5200, offers backup administrators a choice of client or target deduplication based on the type of data being protected, helping IT departments manage information in a way that makes the most sense for their IT environment with software, appliances and cloud-based solutions.

Symantec claims that backups can be up to 10 times faster as a result of NetBackup 5200 client deduplication which eliminates redundant data at the information source, leading to lower bandwidth utilization. For client machines that do not have sufficient CPU cycles for deduplication, the deduplication processing can be moved to the NetBackup 5200 appliance.

Symantec also announced it has expanded its NetBackup 5000 deduplication appliance series, which the company announced in September 2010, with the NetBackup 5020 appliance which increases backup capacity from 16 TB per node to 32 TB per node.

The NetBackup 5020 is ideal for remote office, virtual machine and data center backups. The appliance comes with with 32 TB of usable deduplication capacity that can be used in primary, secondary and remote sites, managed through one console. The appliance can be added to existing NetBackup environments and all NetBackup software agents can be used with it, allowing customers to update or expand their existing backup infrastructure.

The NetBackup 5200 appliance is available now in the US, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Singapore and Australia, and the NetBackup 5020 appliance is available now in the US. Both appliances will roll out in additional countries in a phased approach as demand increases.
