Symantec announced this week that it is combining the VeriSign checkmark, which it inherited as a result of its acquisition of VeriSign’s Authentication Services business in 2010, with its Norton brand to create a single seal dubbed the “Norton Secured Seal.”

The goal of the Norton Secured Seal is to serve as recognizable trust mark for online consumers and businesses and to provide assurance that it is safe to communicate, transact and exchange information on that site.

Symantec began transitioning VeriSign seals to the new Norton Secured Seal on April 17, 2012, a process that the company says will take about two weeks and will not require any action or code changes by current customers unless they self-host the seal.

The company claims the seal can help business attract new visitors and potential customers, resulting in increased traffic, more click throughs and higher rankings in search results. By Symantec’s numbers, the seal will be served up on Websites and in search results to the tune of more than a half a billion times per day.
