Worldwide revenue for mobile security client software grew 16% between the first and second quarter of 2010, according to Infonetics Research, a market research firm.
Infonetics’ Security Client Software report provides regional and worldwide market size, select market share, forecasts through 2014, and analysis for security client software for consumer and enterprise desktops/laptops, and for mobile security clients, including data protection clients for smartphones.

• The mobile security client software segment is forecast by Infonetics to grow at a 50% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2009 to 2014
• Worldwide sales of desktop security client software have remained relatively steady following a surge in late 2009, with strong year-over-year growth expected for 2010
• Consumer-focused desktop client security solutions make up the largest segment of the security client software market, driven by the need to protect against Web-based threats and threats distributed through social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter
• Symantec continues its strong lead in the overall desktop security client software market, and McAfee and Kaspersky maintain their second and third positions, respectively
• Sales of security client software is strongest in North America, where nearly half of worldwide revenue is generated
“The most interesting news in the mobile client security market right now is the heavy industry consolidation going on. Juniper acquired SMobile and is diving headfirst into the enterprise mobile security market; McAfee picked up two enterprise-focused mobile security companies: Trust Digital and tenCube; and Symantec picked up GuardianEdge. Consolidation will help drive strong growth in the mobile client security software market as larger vendors can put real marketing muscle behind the technology that they’ve acquired,” Said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research.
According to a recent Ziff Davis study commissioned by Entrust, Inc. concerns about security issues are preventing companies from implementing features on mobile applications that are commonly available for the desktop. For mobile applications that feature transaction-based capabilities, these concerns are particularly acute.
The report, priced at $5,500, provides market share for Kaspersky, McAfee, Symantec, and Trend Micro, and tracks client software made by AhnLab, Avast!, Avira, BitDefender, Bluefire, Bullguard, Check Point/ZoneAlarm, Credant, Dr. Web, F-Secure, GuardianEdge, Juniper/SMobile, Kaspersky, McAfee, Mobile Armor, Panda, Sophos, Symantec, Trend Micro, and others.
The increased demand for use of multitasking smartphones within organisations has prompted them to deploy mobile applications that will allow users to carry out their jobs from their devices. However, device security and management remain the foremost security concerns for the companies which are planning to move their operations to mobile devices, according to a report conducted by McAfee.
