Samsung this week announced three new lines of external hard disk drives, including two new portable drives and a new desktop drive targeted to the consumer market, but also ideal for small businesses. Each new drive features “SuperSpeed USB 3.0” interfaces that provide data transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second, and 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB storage capacities.
The new drives also feature 256-bit Full Disk Encryption which provides additional security on a hardware basis. Samsung’s auto backup software supports both automatic and continuous data backup, allowing files to be backed up automatically every time they are changed or created. Samsung SecretZone™ allows users to create a secure virtual drive, and SafetyKey™ software provides encrypted data backup and password-setting. Samsung will offer a USB docking station that will be sold separately for both the basic and premium line products, allowing users to connect and transfer data to a PC.
Wondering about USB 3.0 performance? Samsung says its USB 3.0 drives allow users to transfer a 25-gigabyte high-definition movie in just four minutes, compared with 13 minutes for previous USB 2.0 interface drives.
All three new external storage lines will hit retailers in April. Samsung has not yet provided pricing information.
