Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE:SAI) announced it has donated $250,000 to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation to support the creation of a Center for Cyber Security Studies, part of the Navy’s increased focus on cyber security and cyber warfare.

The center will enhance educational opportunities available to midshipmen, faculty and staff by supporting the study of cyber security and cyber warfare, and will serve as a center for curricular innovation, community outreach, and learning.

“SAIC is a leading private sector center of cyber expertise. We understand how critical this field is to the future of this nation,” said SAIC Chief Executive Officer Walt Havenstein. “In addition, we strongly support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, which is, of course, something at which the academy excels. Helping the academy maintain its excellence in this crucial field is therefore doubly appropriate for SAIC.”

The U. S. Naval Academy Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation that raises resources to supplement federal funds to improve the education and training offered at the academy. Private funds are also used to jumpstart and operate new programs until appropriated funds become available. These programs can have significant impact on the quality of the education provided at the academy, the development of future Navy and Marine Corps officers, and ultimately, the long-term security of the nation.

SAIC’s initiatives in national security span all branches of the military and also help the U.S. Department of Defense, the FBI, and other agencies combat terrorism, cybercrime, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
