Dental and orthodontic care provider JDC Healthcare Management (JDC) has revealed that the information of a large number of Texans was compromised in a data breach discovered last year.
JDC, which operates more than 70 Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics clinics, notified the Texas Attorney General’s Office that the personal information of more than one million individuals was likely stolen during the cyberattack.
The incident was identified in August 2021, when the dental services provider discovered that the attackers had access to its network for weeks.
“Certain documents stored within JDC’s environment were copied from or viewed on the system as part of the cyber incident between July 27, 2021 and August 16, 2021,” the company says in a data breach notification letter sent to the impacted individuals.

JDC says that, while it has yet to determine the full scope of the data breach, the investigation has uncovered that personal information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, ID numbers, and health and financial data was likely stolen during the attack.
The healthcare provider did not share details on the type of cyberattack it suffered, but did mention that malware was used and that systems were taken offline, which suggests that ransomware might have been employed.
“On or about August 9, 2021, JDC became aware of a malware incident impacting certain company systems. JDC immediately worked to restore its systems and launched an investigation,” JDC says.
The company says it has found no evidence of the exfiltrated data being misused, but encourages impacted individuals to remain vigilant against identity theft and fraud attempts.
JDC also says that it is reviewing its existing policies and procedures to improve them and prevent similar attacks in the future.
