Oracle Appliance Helps Protect Big Data in the Enterprise

Oracle is releasing a bolstered version of its Big Data Appliance with new security features designed to help organization better protect Hadoop and NoSQL platforms.

Announced at the annual OpenWorld conference today in San Francisco, the company said the goal of the product is to provide the type of security capabilities missing from big data architectures.

“Hadoop systems and NoSQL databases have proven to be ground-breaking technology for Big Data management. However, most solutions on the market cannot withstand the stringent demands of the enterprise where security is absolutely essential and can’t be compromised,” said Çetin Özbütün senior vice president of Data Warehousing and Big Data Technologies at Oracle, in a statement.

According to Oracle, the Big Data Appliance now offers integrated enterprise security via pre-configured Kerberos authentication, LDAP-based authorization and centralized auditing with Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall. By consolidating and analyzing the Hadoop audit trail, Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall can help organizations enforce policies and detect suspicious activities, as well as generate reports required for regulatory compliance.

The company also announced new versions of Big Data Connectors and Oracle NoSQL Database with enhancements around performance and scalability. The improvements run the gamut, and include XQuery Processing in Hadoop to enable standard XQuery operations to process and transform XML documents, enhanced predictive modeling, faster Hadoop processing and other functionality such as parallel data scans for users of the Oracle NoSQL Database.

“With the latest enhancements to Oracle Big Data Appliance, Oracle is addressing the enterprise-grade security and performance needs customers require in Big Data solutions,” Özbütün said.
