What's old is new again. In a follow-up to a report earlier this year on the reappearance of visual basic code in malicious documents, researchers at Sophos have found that the trend has not only continued - it's increased.

I recently spoke to a reporter preparing a story on California’s new smartphone “Kill Switch” law. This law requires mobile devices sold in California starting July 1, 2015 to include an opt-in feature allowing consumers to remotely render a device useless in case of theft. While I support this, some don’t.

JPMorgan Chase, one of the largest banks in the United States, has confirmed that its systems were breached this summer, but investigators say there's no evidence that the attackers had gained access to highly sensitive information.

Demands for Google users' data have shot up 150 percent worldwide since 2009, according to the latest edition of Google's Transparency report. According to Google, there has been a 250 percent increase during that period in the U.S. In the first half of this year, demands for information in the U.S. jumped 19 percent.

Recently, at a round table discussion, I heard someone make the statement, “In five years, there will be no more security analysts. They will be replaced by technology.” This is not the first time I have heard a statement along these lines. I suppose that these sorts of statements are attention grabbing and headline worthy, but I think they are a bit naïve to say the least.
