McAfee has announced McAfee Mobile Security 2.0, confirming the software’s presence in the Android Market last week, which appeared out of the blue to some users. The update is a step forward for overall resource usage and cosmetic improvements, but the base functionality remains the same.

Available for Android, BlackBerry, and Symbian devices, McAfee’s mobile product offers a few new features, including information on what a given application is doing with the information on a user’s device, and if the requested permissions pose a risk. In addition, users can also block phone numbers and text messages within the app.

Based on McAfee’s threat intelligence network, as mentioned, the basics of their mobile security application have not changed. It’s designed to detect malicious files, which may come from other applications, Web usage, or content stored on the memory card. In addition, those who access email on their smartphones will get Phishing protection. McAfee’s Site Advisor resource will also monitor links that are sent via SMS, email, and Social Networking applications.

Other features in the full version include remote wipe, device lock, system backup and restoration, and remote location – should the device ever be lost or stolen. All of the features are tied into an online management system, which McAfee offers to users.

Existing Mobile Protection users can update free, but the entire suite will cost $29.99.
