Japanese optical products manufacturer Hoya Corporation on Thursday announced that it is scrambling to restore systems at some of its production plants following a cyberattack over the weekend.
The incident occurred on March 30 and prompted the company to isolate some of its servers, which impacted IT systems at its headquarters and business divisions.
“In the morning of March 30, 2024, we discovered a discrepancy in system behavior at one of our overseas offices and confirmed that a system failure had occurred. We immediately responded by isolating the failed servers,” the lens manufacturer said in an incident notification (PDF).
Hoya said it has been working with its business divisions and external forensic investigators to respond to and investigate the attack. Relevant authorities in the affected countries have been notified.
“While the full effects, extent and nature of the incident continue to be investigated, the systems for some production plants and the ordering system for several products have been affected,” Hoya said.
“The company is making every effort to respond to customer demand and minimize the impact on our customers to the greatest extent possible,” it added.
According to the lens maker, it has yet to determine whether any confidential or personal information was compromised in the attack. However, the investigation is expected “to take a considerable number of days,” the company noted.
In the meantime, Hoya is focusing on restoring the impacted production and sales systems as soon as possible.
Hoya did not say what type of cyberattack it fell victim to, but the broad and lengthy disruption is consistent with the effects of a ransomware attack.
Headquartered in Hoya, near Tokyo, Hoya Corporation manufactures a wide range of optical products, including contact lenses, eyeglass lenses, lasers, endoscopy equipment, photomasks, and hard disk drive platters.
