Google ships an Android security update with fixes for 15 vulnerabilities, including a critical-severity flaw in Framework.

Android security updates

Google has released patches for 25 documented security vulnerabilities in the Android operating system, including a critical-severity flaw in the Framework component.

The critical bug, tracked as CVE-2024-31320, impacts Android versions 12 and 12L and allows an attacker to escalate privileges on a vulnerable device.

“The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in the Framework component that could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed,” Google explains in an advisory.

The security defect was addressed as part of the 2024-07-01 security patch level, which also addresses seven other high-severity issues, including three escalation of privilege bugs in Framework, three escalation of privilege vulnerabilities in System, and one information disclosure flaw in System.

The second part of Android’s July 2024 security update arrives on devices as the 2024-07-05 security patch level and resolves 17 vulnerabilities in Kernel, Arm, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, and Qualcomm components.

Devices running a security level of 2024-07-05 contain patches for all 25 bugs. Users are advised to update their devices as soon as the update becomes available for them.

Google released no new patches as part of the Android Automotive security refresh this month, but noted that the update contains all the Android fixes a security patch level of 2024-07-05 contains.

The internet giant has yet to publish a security bulletin detailing the patches rolling out to Pixel devices. Last month, the Pixel security update addressed an elevation of privilege issue exploited in the wild as a zero-day and the security bulletin was published roughly two weeks after the June 2024 Android security bulletin.
