GFI Software, maker of the VIPRE antivirus product line and other security tools and services, on Monday said that it would spin off its security business unit.

The newly created spinoff, ThreatTrack Security, Inc., will focus on the continued growth and development of the VIPRE, SandBox and ThreatTrack solutions.

“As an independent company, ThreatTrack Security will be able to focus exclusively on creating high-end anti-malware solutions and be more responsive to the evolving security needs of organizations like yours,” the company said in a statement.

Julian Waits, general manager of the security business unit for GFI will become CEO of ThreatTrack Security, which will continue to be based in Clearwater, Florida.

According to GFI, customers will not be affected and will continue to receive the same level of service for GFI products as they do currently. Existing IDs and log-ins for VIPRE, SandBox or ThreatTrack customers will remain unchanged until further notice, the company said.

In July 2010, GFI Software acquired security software provider Sunbelt Software to get its hands on Sunbelt’s VIPRE product line, which the company merged into GFI’s email security and web security solutions group, and allowed GFI to offer its own antivirus product.
