Companies Join Forces to Deliver Android-based Commercial Smartphones and Tablets with Defense-grade Security

General Dynamics C4 Systems, a division of General Dynamics that develops and integrates secure information systems and technology, today announced that it will integrate its defense-grade cyber and information security technologies into the family of Samsung Approved for Enterprise (SAFE™) smartphones and tablets.

Additionally, the SAFE devices will be upgraded with the new Samsung Secure Android platform and targeted for customers ranging from the military and government agencies, to law enforcement and public safety, to financial, utility and other industry personnel who need to browse the public Internet as well as access secure networks.

“Operating on commercial cell phone networks and in cyberspace on the same device is becoming increasingly hazardous, particularly if you are sharing sensitive information,” said Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems. “Combining General Dynamics’ expertise in cyber security with Samsung’s commercial products creates a new, extremely cost-effective selection of secure mobile devices.”

The company explained that the secure technologies that it will integrate into the Samsung products are similar to those trusted to protect information classified from the Secret level and below for the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, federal agencies and coalition partners.

“Samsung’s new secure platform is equipped with FIPS-certified VPN and on-device encryption, secure separation of work spaces, fortified mobile device management (MDM) and integrity management features,” said Dr. Injong Rhee, Vice President, Global Head of Enterprise Strategy and Engineering Groups. “Together, Samsung and General Dynamics will deliver feature-rich and cost-effective products to this information security-sensitive industry.”

According to General Dynamics, there are currently 20 different Samsung SAFE devices available at all major U.S. carriers, price points and form factors. In addition to enhanced security provided by General Dynamics, SAFE smartphones and tablets provide organizations with a holistic enterprise mobility solution that ensures IT compliance and serves as a resource for enterprises needing a simple, yet comprehensive strategy for deploying Android devices into their networks.

The enhanced Samsung products should be available by mid-2013 and will be sold by General Dynamics and through government contract vehicles such as the General Services Administration (GSA).
