At the recent Forrester Security Forum in Boston, IBM Security executives discussed how companies can more effectively manage cost, complexity and compliance in a world where threats are constantly changing and information is always compounding. Subjects discussed include data controls, malware defense, patch management, misperception of risk, secure by design, and more.

Jack Danahy, Security Executive from the Rational Software division of IBM, emphasized that knowing what is happening within an organization is key. “In the advancing world of technology, one of the most important security controls is the new invention called something called spread sheet,” said Danahy. “The ones who are doing the best jobs are the ones who understand what things are doing. They understand what systems are where, what data is where, who can touch what, when the last time systems were updated, which systems have been tested effectively – and they are tracking it. The biggest enemy, after complexity, to security, is ignorance,” Danahy added.
