FireEye, a provider of advanced threat protection solutions for enterprises, announced that Enrique Salem, former Symantec president and chief executive officer at Symantec, has been appointed to the FireEye board of directors.

Salem brings over 25 years of experience working with high-tech companies in senior leadership roles including 19 years at Symantec. He served as president and CEO of Brightmail prior to its acquisition by Symantec. In March 2011, Salem was also appointed to President Barack Obama’s Management Advisory Board.

FireEye is led by chairman and CEO David DeWalt who previously served as president and CEO at McAfee from April 2007 until February 2011, after Intel’s surprise $7.68 billion acquisition of McAfee.

Salem was pushed out of his position at Symantec back in July 2012, and replaced by Steve Bennett who took over the role as president and chief executive officer of the Mountain View, California-based security giant.

“I have been watching FireEye for a while now and am very impressed with what they have accomplished and how they are redefining IT security. Their unique virtualized security model is exactly what is required in today’s threat landscape to help protect companies against this new wave of cyber attacks,” said Salem. “I am honored to be part of the FireEye board and am looking forward to working with the outstanding leadership team and board that has been assembled.”

“Enrique is a great addition to the FireEye board of directors. He brings a wealth of IT security market expertise as well as a great deal of experience in the management of large public companies,” said Dave DeWalt, FireEye chairman and CEO. “As FireEye continues to grow and expand, Enrique’s membership on the board will be invaluable and we look forward to his insight and advice.”

Earlier this year, FireEye announced that it had raised $50 million in venture funding, an amount that brought the total amount raised by the company to over $100 million.

The appointment of Salem to the Board of Directors brings the number of FireEye board members to eight, and includes David DeWalt; Ashar Aziz, FireEye founder and CTO; William M. Coughran, former SVP of engineering at Google; Ronald E. F. Codd, former CFO and SVP of finance and administration at PeopleSoft; Robert Lentz, former CISO of the Department of Defense; Promod Hague, managing partner at Norwest Venture Partners; and Gaurav Garg, investor and founder of Redback Networks.
