Cloud data governance and security solutions provider Privacera this week announced that it raised $13.5 million in a Series A founding round.

Founded in 2016, the company is focused on providing secure access to data across cloud and on-premises servers. The company seeks to address the growing demand for compliance, data governance, and security of assets that is fueled by the wider migration to the cloud.

In addition to governance and security, organizations would also benefit from data discovery capabilities, as well as access control and analytics tools, the company says.

Privacera seeks to extend the capabilities of the Apache Ranger framework to cloud-native services and platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Databricks.

Balaji Ganesan, CEO and co-founder of Privacera, points out that the company’s experience in working with the Apache Ranger community has helped it in designing the architecture required to quickly and efficiently support compliance and governance in the cloud.

“We help IT and data teams meet the dual mandate of balancing data democratization with data security. Data teams are tasked with making data shareable across the business, while ensuring the governance, compliance and privacy requirements that have become table stakes are adhered to. Privacera’s mission is to help companies leverage their data while meeting internal and external mandates,” he said.

The funding round was led by Accel. Previous investors Alchemist Accelerator, Cervin Ventures, and Point 72, as well as David Dubick, also participated in the round.

Privacera plans to use the funds to advance existing work and accelerate investment in research and development and customer-facing teams.
