Cyber Defense Competition Draws 651 Teams From Across The Nation
Back on September 24th we reported that CyberPatriot, a cyber defense competition for high schools, had registered more than 450 teams. In just a couple weeks, registration has spiked to 661 teams.
Registration is now closed and teams are now preparing for the preliminaries which begin October 23, via the competition’s practice rounds where they learn to defend computer networks from realistic computer threat scenarios. Once the preliminaries begin, hundreds of teams will compete to solve vulnerabilities in their networks. The top teams compete again in a series of online rounds to determine the finalists for an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. and the Championship ound at the Gaylord National Convention Center in April 2011.
CyberPatriot provides students interactive learning while competing virtually against their peers. Teams of five, with an approved coach (usually a teacher), learn to defend computer networks from real-life computer threat scenarios.
“CyberPatriot calls attention to one of the nation’s most critical needs by exciting, educating and motivating the talent who will become the country’s next generation of cyber leaders,” said Bernie Skoch, CyberPatriot Commissioner. “Educators are continually learning about this great opportunity for their students, so we’re excited to have this number of registered schools in our unique competition.”
Forty-eight states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and U.S. Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Japan, Korea and Guam are represented in this year’s competition
