Just days before the RSA Conference in San Francisco kicked off, Canadian mobile phone maker BlackBerry announced the launch of a new Professional Cybersecurity Services practice and the acquisition of UK-based cybersecurity consulting firm Encription Limited.

The smartphone maker says that it is looking to address the cybersecurity consulting needs of organizations that depend on mobile endpoints that connect through networked and cloud-enabled platforms, as well as those only now emerging in the automotive sector with connected cars.

According to BlackBerry, the new Professional Cybersecurity Services practice aims to address:

Strategic Security: Best practices in IT operation ranging across enterprise mobility management and cloud services.

Technical assistance for infrastructure and product development lifecycle.

Automotive and IoT Security: Security consulting services as the rapid commercialization of IoT solutions makes security and privacy a top priority.

Detection, Testing and Analysis: Threat detection and mitigation penetration testing, vulnerability assessment and incident response analysis.

According to the company, its new services and tools will help customers identify the latest threats and defend against the risks of future attacks. The newly announced acquisition of Encription Limited falls in line with this strategy, with the cybersecurity consulting experience the UK-based firm brings to BlackBerry.

While it would not disclose the specific terms of the acquisition, BlackBerry did say that Encription’s specialties include both technical skills in software security and hardware capabilities, such as assessments in penetration testing. By acquiring Encription, BlackBerry adds another security certification to its portfolio, as the UK company previously received CESG CHECK IT and ISO/IEC 27001 certifications.
