Barracuda Networks has teamed up with Microsoft to bring additional levels of protection to web applications and data hosted in Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud.

Announced at the RSA Conference taking place this week in San Francisco, Barracuda said that Windows Azure developers will now be able to leverage its Web Application Firewall (WAF) to protect new and existing applications in the cloud against application layer risks, including SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and session tampering.

“With this strategic relationship between Barracuda Networks and Microsoft, Windows Azure developers will be able to secure their cloud applications with the same high levels of protection used in the most security conscious on-premises data centers,” the company explained in a statement.

Available as physical or virtual appliance, Barracuda’s Web Application Firewall helps block attacks targeting web-based applications, and is continually updated to defend against attacks such as SQL injections, cross-site scripting (XSS), session spoofing, XML-based attacks, brute-force attacks, malware uploads, and more. Additionally, the solution helps prevent data loss through outbound inspection and authentication capabilities, while also boosting the performance of web applications.

“We are excited about this relationship with Barracuda,” said Scott Guthrie, vice president, Windows Azure at Microsoft. “Application developers who take advantage of the global, scalable, and reliable Windows Azure cloud will soon be able to use the Barracuda Web Application Firewall to provide additional security for their applications and data.”
