Google this week announced patches for more than 50 vulnerabilities as part of the March 2023 security updates for the Android platform.
The most severe of these are two remote code execution (RCE) flaws in the System component, both of which were addressed as part of the 2023-03-01 security patch level.
A total of 18 bugs were addressed in the System component this month, 16 of which are rated ‘high’ severity. Google also resolved eight security defects in the Framework component, all rated ‘high’ severity.
“The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in the System component that could lead to remote code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation,” Google notes in its advisory.
An additional 29 vulnerabilities were resolved with the second part of the March 2023 Android updates, which arrives on devices as the 2023-03-05 security patch level.
These vulnerabilities impact the Android Kernel, MediaTek, Unisoc, Qualcomm, and Qualcomm closed-source components. Most of the issues are high-severity flaws, except for two bugs in Qualcomm closed-source components, which are rated ‘critical’.
Google announced that no Android Automotive OS security patches were released this month, but made no mention of security updates for the Pixel phones, which is surprising, considering that Pixel updates are typically announced simultaneously with new Android patches each month.
