Deployment of Domain Name System Security Extensions Enhances global security for India and Asia
Afilias, a provider of Internet infrastructure services, this week announced that it has enabled Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) for the .IN country code top-level domain (TLD) for the country of India and, in coordination with DotAsia, announced that (DNSSEC) has been enabled for the .ASIA top-level domain.
These announcements come shortly the company announced DNSSEC support for five country code Top-Level-Domains (ccTLDs) in Latin America and the Caribbean region in October.

“DotAsia has always put security and stability of the Internet as a top priority for our community. The implementation of DNSSEC furthers our commitment to foster a safe and secure environment for ecommerce to prosper in Asia. With DNSSEC, the identity of domains can be further secured to protect businesses and Internet users transacting on .ASIA domains,” said Edmon Chung, CEO of DotAsia at the launch ceremony in Beijing.
The over 700,000 .IN domain names are currently registered will be able to utilize DNSSEC which was officially signed on November 4, 2010 and its Delegation Signer (DS) records are expected to be entered into the DNS Root by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) shortly, allowing the .IN zone to be validated using DNSSEC.
“DNSSEC is a critical step forward for India and serves as a foundation to ensure that the .IN TLD remains among the most secure domains in the world,” said Ram Mohan, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Afilias and regular SecurityWeek columnist.
“Security is a key priority for India and we are pleased to be among the leaders taking the initiative to support the adoption of DNSSEC,” said Mr. Ravi Shanker, Chief Executive Officer for the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), the .IN registry operator.
DNSSEC protects the DNS from cache poisoning exploits which can allow malicious entities to intercept an Internet users’ request to access a website, and redirect or eavesdrop on the user without their knowledge, and with no ability to reassert control. DNSSEC introduces digital signatures to the DNS infrastructure and automatically ensures that users are not hijacked and taken to an unintended destination.
