Trend Micro has released patches for a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in Trend Micro ServerProtect.

Tracked as CVE-2021-36745 and featuring a CVSS score of 9.8, the security hole could be exploited by remote attackers to completely bypass authentication on a vulnerable system.

The enterprise-grade real-time malware detection solution provides virus, spyware and rootkit protection for servers, while also automating security operations. Also packing cleanup capabilities, the software features support for multiple platforms.

The newly addressed vulnerability was reported to Trend Micro in April. It was discovered by Yuto Maeda from Cyber Defense Institute and reported through Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative (ZDI).

“The specific flaw exists within the ServerProtect console. The issue results from the lack of proper validation prior to authentication. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to bypass authentication on the system,” ZDI reveals in an advisory.

Trend Micro says the vulnerability affects ServerProtect for Storage (SPFS) 6.0 for Windows, ServerProtect for EMC Celerra (SPEMC) 5.8, ServerProtect for Network Appliance Filers (SPNAF) 5.8, and ServerProtect for Microsoft Windows / Novell Netware (SPNT) 5.8.

Fixes are now available for all affected versions and users are advised to update their installations as soon as possible.

A mitigating factor for this type of vulnerability, Trend Micro says, is the fact that the attacker generally needs physical or remote access to a vulnerable machine. Thus, exploitation is less likely to succeed if remote access isn’t available and perimeter security is up to date.

“However, even though an exploit may require several specific conditions to be met, Trend Micro strongly encourages customers to update to the latest builds as soon as possible,” the company notes.

It’s important that users deploy the patches as it’s not uncommon for threat actors to exploit vulnerabilities in Trend Micro products.
