At the Symantec Vision Conference in Las Vegas today, Symantec announced a new security application designed to help organizations extend the visibility of their IT infrastructure to include cloud-based applications such as Salesforce. The solution, Symantec Security Assessment for Salesforce, will be available on the Salesforce AppExchange and integrate with the Symantec Control Compliance Suite, providing customers a view of the security and compliance of information and applications whether they reside on premise or in the cloud.

Symantec has also joined the salesforce.com partner ecosystem, which will allow Symantec to build applications using Force.com technologies, distribute to new customers and market to existing salesforce.com customers via the AppExchange.

“We’ve heard from our customers that security is one of the top concerns they have about moving to the cloud. Building confidence in the cloud ultimately means that customers will have the same visibility and control of their information and applications whether they are in the cloud or residing on the customer’s own infrastructure,” said Francis deSouza, senior vice president, Enterprise Security Group, Symantec. “Together, Symantec and salesforce.com are innovating to deliver more visibility and transparency for customers moving to the cloud.”

“Salesforce.com understands that the confidentiality, integrity and availability of our customers’ information are vital to their business operations,” said Ron Huddleston, senior vice president, salesforce.com. “Our work with Symantec underscores our commitment to providing our customers with comprehensive visibility into the security and compliance requirements of working in the cloud.”

This new application is further designed to allow customers to integrate the assessment data into the Symantec Control Compliance Suite, an automated solution which provides a comprehensive view of an organization’s IT risk and compliance posture. By integrating visibility of cloud-based applications into the Symantec Control Compliance Suite, organizations will be able to define and enforce security policies for cloud-based applications within a holistic solution that can be used across the organization’s broader IT infrastructure.

Built using Force.com, the leading enterprise cloud-computing platform, Symantec Security Assessment for Salesforce is scheduled to be available for test drive and deployment on the AppExchange in Mid-2011. Existing Symantec Control Compliance Suite, with a current subscription, and salesforce.com customers will be able to use the solution at no additional cost.
