ATM maker Diebold said on Thursday that it has deployed the world’s first ATM that that relies solely on mobile authentication and has no card reader or PIN pad.

Diebold said that it partnered with mobile wallet provider Paydiant to develop the ATM, which allows bank customers to complete self-service transactions and make retail purchases without using physical debit or credit cards.

“When a consumer scans a unique QR code at the ATM using a smartphone, the ATM authenticates the user via cloud-hosted services to enable secure, cardless transactions,” the North Canton, Ohio-based company explained. “With no card or PIN required, the solution eliminates the threats of card skimming and shoulder surfing at the ATM.”

By integrating the ATM with a mobile wallet, customers can “pre-stage” cash withdrawals on their smartphones and take out a preselected amount of cash after being authenticated at the ATM.

Managed via the cloud, the new ATM is being deployed as a pilot at the Diebold Federal Credit Union (DFCU), Wintrust Financial Corporation and City National Bank.

“Diebold’s Millennial-inspired ATM offers a new way to meet the needs of our members,” said Dan Gann, president and CEO, DFCU. “They’re readily downloading the mobile wallet application and adopting the technology. In addition, by offering a branded mobile wallet solution, we’re reinforcing our connection to members’ retail purchases and reminding them that we’re enabling this convenience.”

The ATM is also paperless, delivering receipts via the mobile wallet application, Diebold said.

“To develop the Millennial-inspired ATM, we studied the digital and social habits of today’s younger generation,” said Frank Natoli Jr., chief innovation officer, Diebold. “The research led us to choose mobile devices for both the user interface and the authentication vehicle to ensure seamless connectivity between devices. Adding mobile wallet capabilities further capitalizes on the mobile mentality of Millennials. Together, the technologies provide a glimpse of the future of self-service banking for today’s connected consumers.”

Diebold’s Mobile Cash Access (MCA) solution also allows financial institutions to provide a secure, institution-branded mobile wallet solution without installing additional hardware on ATMs or point-of-sale (POS) terminals.

The ATM terminal itself is not yet available for general sale, however, a Dieblod spokesperson told SecurityWeek that if a customer really wants one, they would consider doing a custom production order.
