South Korean tech giant LG this week announced that it will continue to provide operating system updates to users of its premium Android smartphones, for up to three years.
Currently owning less than two percent of the mobile phone market and constantly losing ground over the past year, LG on Monday revealed plans to exit the smartphone business starting this summer.
“The wind down of the mobile phone business is expected to be completed by July 31 although inventory of some existing models may still be available after that,” LG said.
On Thursday, the company announced that it will continue to provide platform updates for all premium LG smartphones that are currently in use.
Such devices, the company says, “will receive up to three iterations of Android operating system updates from the year of purchase.”
With Google releasing new Android OS versions once a year, LG smartphones released in 2021 should receive up to three years of updates.
“The three OS update guarantee applies to LG premium phones released in 2019 and later (G series, V series, VELVET, Wing) while certain 2020 models such as LG Stylo and K series will receive two OS updates,” LG announced.
Furthermore, the South Korean company announced that it will continue to make phones until the end of the second quarter of the year, and that users who buy new devices should expect service support and security software updates, “for a period of time for certain devices.”
Each month, Google is releasing new security patches to address potentially severe vulnerabilities in Android, and many phone makers, LG included, are pushing those fixes to their users in a timely manner to keep them protected.
Moving forward, however, users of certain LG smartphones might no longer receive such patches as often as expected, meaning that their devices might remain exposed to new attacks.
