Less than two years after being aquired by Intel, McAfee said that it will be laying off a “small percentage” of the now-security division’s roughly 7,100 employees, according to a report that was confirmed with SecurityWeek on Thursday.
According to Reuters, McAfee spokesman Ian Bain confirmed the plans but said he could not provide any more information. It was not reported what jobs would be cut or when the layoffs would happen.
Intel’s stock price has slipped this week amidst reports that several analysts had slashed their earnings outlook for the company. In September, officials at Intel announced they were dropping their financial forecast for the third quarter, noting that the PC market was increasingly soft. In a Sept. 7 press release, the company stated that its third quarter revenue is expected to be about $13.2 billion as opposed to the $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion originally predicted.
The company is expected to announce its earnings Oct. 16.
Intel acquired McAfee in 2010 for $7.68 billion, in part with the aim of improving embedded security and baking more security into hardware.
As of June 30, McAfee had 7,072 employees, Bain told Reuters.
