Imperva, a soon to go public provider of data security solutions, today launched a cloud-based service designed to help businesses defend against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The service, “Imperva Cloud DDoS Protection”, helps organizations defend against various types of DDoS threats, including network-based attacks, like SYN or UDP floods, and application attacks that attempt to consume server resources and bring Web servers to a halt.

Powered by Imperva’s cloud-based subsidiary Incapsula, Imperva Cloud DDoS Protection scales on-demand, and can stop multi-gigabit denial of service attacks. Being a cloud-based, managed service, customers can avoid buying costly hardware and save on other management costs. Additionally, the cloud-based model helps organizations keep malicious DDoS attack traffic off their infrastructure by dealing with it before reaching an organizations’ network, something that can help prevent costly bandwidth overage fees.

In addition to mitigating DDoS attacks, customers also benefit from services from Imperva’s Security Operations Center, where security analysts fine-tune policies using collective knowledge about DDoS threats, including new and emerging attack methods and known malicious users. When customers experience a DDoS attack, the Imperva Security Operations Center monitors application performance in an effort to keep protected sites accessible.

“Hackers frequently tune DDoS attacks, and our service will help enterprises better block one of the main weapons in a hacker’s arsenal. This year we’ve seen a number of significant DDoS attacks that have caused significant down time for websites,” said Amichai Shulman, CTO of Imperva. “The Imperva Cloud DDoS service combines scalable DDoS protection that is tuned in real time by a team of DDoS experts.”

Imperva guarantees protection for DDoS Attacks up to 4Gbps, a level that should protect against most DDoS attacks, but perhaps not appropriate for every organization, especially those that may be higher profile targets for attackers and hacktivists. “Most DDoS attacks observed by our SOC have been in the range of 10 Mbps to 200 Mbps. There are only a relatively small number of DDoS attacks that occur each year greater than 4 Gbps,” Imperva’s Kacey Kross told SecurityWeek. “We understand the service may not be appropriate for organizations that anticipate receiving DDoS attacks greater than 4 Gbps, and our maximum commitment will grow over time as we continue to build out our infrastructure,” Kross added.

Pricing for Imperva Cloud DDoS Protection starts at $12,000 per year.
