The HoneyNet Project has released a new version of the Glastopf Web application honeypot software, which can now replicate SQL Injection attacks. The additional function was created as part of a research program funded by DARPA called Cyber Fast Track.

“The majority of web application attacks target the web application’s database. These – so called SQL injection attacks – manipulate the underlying database by providing user input that – due to the vulnerability in the web application – is converted into SQL statements,” the HoneyNet Project explained.

“The main goal of this project was the development of a SQL injection vulnerability emulator that goes beyond the collection of SQL vulnerability probings. It deceives the adversary with crafted responses matching his request into sending us the malicious payload which could include all kinds of malicious code.”

The non-profit HoneyNet Project has been working for years to develop feature rich security tools. It is because of their efforts that security firms and researchers are able to better understand Web-based attacks, and methodologies.

Glastopf has been in development since 2009, and has gained a solid reputation as a Web Application Honeypot. The latest changes to the source code, including the ability to fully emulate an application vulnerable to SQL Injection, can be obtained on the project’s webpage.

A report on the project, including all the technical processes that went into the planning and development is available here
