A hacker going by the name of Guccifer has released confidential memos to former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stolen from the email account of a former White House aide, according to reports.
During the weekend, the hacker released four recent memos to Clinton from Sidney Blumenthal, who served as a senior White House adviser to former President Bill Clinton. The hacker shared some of the documents with congressional aides, political figures and journalists around the world.
It was reported last week that Blumenthal, 64, had his AOL account hacked, making him another in a growing list of politicians and their associates believed to have been targeted by the hacker.
“Each memo dealt with assorted developments in Libya, including the September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi,” according to the Smoking Gun. “One memo marked “Confidential” was sent to Clinton on September 12.”
The Smoking Gun reported that after Blumenthal’s account was compromised, Guccifer searched it for emails sent to Clinton and then sorted the mail to separate any file attachments. After apparently downloading the attachments, the hacker copied the text from the memos, pasted them into new files and made screen shots of the content. Guccifer then mailed the documents out from what is believed to be a compromised AOL account of “the wife of a Hollywood actor,” according to the report.
Guccifer is also believed to be involved in the hacks of email accounts belonging to former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, members of the Bush family, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and others.
