Endpoint detection and response pioneer CrowdStrike is elbowing its way into new security markets with a planned acquisition of attack surface management startup Reposify and a strategic investment in API security vendor Salt Security.

The Reposify transaction, which will be paid mostly in cash, gives CrowdStrike an entry point into the lucrative external attack surface management (EASM) market. CrowdStrike did not disclose the purchase price.

Based in Israel with offices in San Francisco, Reposify raised $8.5 million in early-stage funding to build scanning technology to help organizations track and manage risk and exposure.

CrowdStrike said the Reposify technology will be sold alongside its Threat Intelligence and Security and IT Operations product suites.

The attack surface management category has grown in importance to solve problems with vulnerability and patch management, especially for software and other assets that are exposed to the internet. The technology is meant to address gaps in point-in-time penetration testing and vulnerability management and is a highly competitive category with multiple startups jostling for market share.

Separately, CrowdStrike announced that its Falcon Fund made an unspecified investment in Salt Security, a hotshot API security startup that has so far raised a whopping $271 million from multiple venture capital outfits.

In addition to the investment, CrowdStrike plans to partner with Salt Security to integrate technologies to apply API discovery and runtime protection on applications, and enable security testing to harden APIs before release.

Over the last two years, CrowdStrike has acquired security vendors Humio, Preempt Security, and Secure Circle.
