CipherCloud announced on Tuesday at the RSA Conference in San Francisco the availability of Cloud Discovery Enterprise Edition, a solution designed to help organizations discover shadow applications throughout their corporate ecosystem.

The Cloud Discovery Enterprise Edition offering enables companies to protect sensitive data, gain visibility into cloud usage, monitor user activity, and enforce security policies.

A recent survey conducted by CipherCloud revealed that the use of unsanctioned cloud applications, also known as shadow IT, is widespread. According to the company, 86 percent of the cloud applications used in an enterprise are unsanctioned, and nearly 80 percent of organizations believe they need better governance and visibility tools to address this problem.

“The extent of shadow IT indicates a gap in detection, the first step in the mitigation process,” noted Pravin Kothari, founder and CEO of CipherCloud. “With this latest addition to our platform, we are enabling enterprises to gain deeper visibility and control in the cloud.”

According to CipherCloud, Cloud Discover Enterprise Edition can help organizations avoid data breaches by identifying risky cloud applications that can become the source of an intrusion, detecting users and groups that utilize risky apps, and blocking high-risk applications.

The advanced risk intelligence and cloud application analytics features included in the solution enable organizations to tame shadow IT, while visibility, compliance and reporting capabilities are useful for managing risks, the company said.

The solution is also useful for consolidating cloud applications by helping organizations move to sanctioned apps without impacting productivity, and reduce costs, such as subscription fees, associated with unused accounts.

CipherCloud told SecurityWeek that Cloud Discover Enterprise Edition is available for CipherCloud platform users by default, but it can also be acquired separately as a stand-alone solution. Pricing is subscription based by user.
