Zettaset, a Mountain View, California-based provider of Big Data management and security solutions, said on Monday that it has filed a misappropriation of trade secrets civil complaint against Intel.

According to the complaint, which was filed in a Superior Court in California, Zettaset alleges, among other things, that Intel unlawfully extracted trade secrets from Zettaset’s product and technology to such a level that the Intel Manager for Apache Hadoop Software now mirrors the features and functionality of Zettaset’s Orchestrator software.

Orchestrator is Zettaset’s flagship Hadoop management platform that works with any open source Apache Hadoop-based distribution, and helps users automate, secure, and accelerate Hadoop deployments and reduce Hadoop deployment costs.

“We have made significant investments in developing our Orchestrator management platform,” said Jim Vogt, President and Chief Executive Officer at Zettaset. “We had no alternative but to take legal action to protect our intellectual property so we can continue to invest in our cutting edge technology and provide solutions that address the growing needs of the Big Data market.”

According to Zettaset, the discovery phase in the case has commenced and a pre-trial conference is scheduled for February 14, 2014.

Originally named GOTO Metrics, the company was re-named Zettaset in 2011 at the same time it announced a $3 million round of funding. In January 2013, the company announced that it had closed a $10 million Series B round of venture funding led by HighBar Partners.
