SAP Patches Critical Vulnerabilities in NetWeaver

German software maker SAP this week released 17 new security notes documenting security vulnerabilities being fixed as part of the company’s June 2021 SAP Security Patch Day.

German software maker SAP this week released 17 new security notes documenting security vulnerabilities being fixed as part of the company’s June 2021 SAP Security Patch Day.

SAP NetWeaver received the largest number of patches with a total of 10 security notes documenting and resolving vulnerabilities.

The most important of the new notes addresses an improper authentication vulnerability in NetWeaver ABAP Server and ABAP Platform. Tracked as CVE-2021-27610, the vulnerability features a CVSS score of 9.

The issue exists because an ABAP server could not correctly identify if communication via RFC or HTTP is between the application servers of the same SAP system or with servers outside the same system.

Because of this flaw, a malicious user could abuse stolen credentials for external RFC or HTTP calls, to establish a connection with the affected SAP system, in which a malicious external program would pretend to be an internal caller.

A high-risk missing XML validation in NetWeaver AS for JAVA (CVSS score of 8.7) could be abused to read files on the filesystem or to cause the system to crash.

Three other security notes patch ten memory corruption flaws in NetWeaver ABAP Server and ABAP Platform (CVSS score of 8.5).

All of the remaining security notes released on SAP’s June 2021 Security Patch Day address medium risk vulnerabilities. Five of the notes patch flaws in NetWeaver AS ABAP and ABAP Platform, Netweaver AS for ABAP (Web Survey), and NetWeaver AS ABAP.

Other affected applications include SAP Business One, Manufacturing Execution, IGS, Enable Now (Workforce Performance Builder – Manager), Commerce Cloud, and 3D Visual Enterprise Viewer.

SAP also announced two updates to security notes that were released on April 2021 Security Patch Day: one addressing a critical remote code execution bug in Source Rules of SAP Commerce, and another patching a medium risk missing authorization check in HCM Travel Management Fiori Apps V2.
