Security Experts:

Fuji Electric Patches Vulnerabilities in Factory Monitoring Software

Japanese electrical equipment company Fuji Electric has patched half a dozen types of vulnerabilities in its Tellus factory monitoring and operating product.

The security holes, identified by Michael Heinzl and a researcher who uses the online moniker “kimiya,” were discovered in the Tellus Lite V-Simulator and V-Server Lite products, which are used worldwide to remotely monitor and operate factories. Versions prior to 4.0.12.0 are affected.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on Tuesday published an advisory to inform organizations about the flaws and the availability of fixes.

The vulnerabilities include various memory-related issues that can be exploited for DoS attacks, arbitrary code execution, or to obtain potentially sensitive information. A high severity rating has been assigned to each of the flaws.

The issues were reported through Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), which noted that user interaction is required to exploit the vulnerabilities — i.e. opening specially crafted files.

ZDI has released many advisories describing variations of these vulnerabilities, most of which, the company says, are caused by the lack of proper validation for user-supplied data. ZDI published the advisories in late August with a “0Day” status to indicate that patches had not been available. However, ZDI noted at the time that fixes would be released by the vendor in October.
